Ingredients:
6 slices of white bread
6 slices of cooked ham
6 slices of Gruyere cheese
4 eggs
1 cup of milk
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp flour
1/4 tsp nutmeg
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Make the béchamel sauce by melting the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Once melted, add the flour and stir until it forms a paste. Cook for 1 minute, then gradually add the milk while whisking constantly to prevent lumps from forming.
Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes, or until thickened. Season with nutmeg, salt, and pepper to taste.
Take 4 slices of bread, and place a slice of ham and a slice of Gruyere cheese on each one. Top with another slice of bread to make a sandwich.
Heat a skillet over medium heat, and melt a little butter. Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
Transfer the sandwiches to a baking dish and top each one with béchamel sauce.
Crack an egg on top of each sandwich.
Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes, or until the egg is cooked to your liking.
Serve hot and enjoy your deluxe Croque Madame!
